The aim of the work was to design a cycling and kayak tourism center that will be connected with a day care center for the elderly. The facility is located in Józefów, about 30 km from Warsaw, Poland. The phenomenon of aging of the society has become a challenge for many suburban cities in Poland, including Józefów. Many young people are moving to the capital. In its development strategy for 2015-2025 Józefów aims to create a social and cultural program for seniors.
The city is characterized by high natural values and a microclimate conducive to development of sanatoriums. It is also known for the proximity of three rivers. The winding course of the river Świder and the sandy bottom make it a good place for kayaking. The location is also conducive to cycling trips alongside the river with some well-known cycling paths nearby.
Thanks to the sports and rehabilitation facilities of the designed center, opportunities to develop interests and direct contact with nature, the elderly, both in their own home and in nearby care homes, would have an alternative to spending their free time and the possibility to enjoy the therapeutic properties of the garden. The sports and recreation offer is addressed to various groups of users, which would facilitate the integration of seniors with other residents, as well as people from outside Józefów.
Respecting the unique natural values of the location and striving for the least possible interference in the area were the reason for using compacted soil as one of the main building materials in the project.
