In present dynamically developing world education requires interactions between various fields of science and various groups of people. The way to provide appropriate practical and theoretical development is to enhance student-professionalist integration. Unfortunately nowadays the academic community is totally isolated from employers.
As the environment’s condition is getting worse and worse it’s high time to consider the artist’s role during climate crisis. “Zero waste” lifestyle is getting more and more popular lately, however complete change of the consumerist model is a huge challenge. A way to reduce human’s negative impact on the environment is a promotion of, forgotten nowadays, values of handicrafts. It can result in reduction of waste created by reckless mass-product shopping.
The New Arts and Crafts School on Bastion Miś aims to solve aforementioned problems by forming alternative school programme which combines office spaces with arts and crafts school based on the upcycling idea. Reffering to the upcycling idea also in architecture design I decided to implement created functional programme by adapting abandoned complex of postindustrial buildings in Gdańsk, Poland.
After conducting series of social and spatial district analysis I decided to enrich the functional programme with spaces that would enhance social integration by means of art and education.
The main design goal was to propose a harmonic, functional and minimal extension of existing buildings while creating an attractive public space in a chaotic and degraded postindustrial area.
