Despite serving extraordinary benefits to coastal ecosystems, mangroves are among the most threatened habitats in the world as they have disappeared with alarming speed in the last few decades. By some estimates, less than 50 percent of the world’s mangrove forests were intact at the end of the 20th century, and half of those that remain are in poor condition.
Being the country with the highest rate of mangrove loss of any nation, Thailand urgently needs to find an effective solution to save this important natural resource. Supported by many philosophies and organizations such as SEP, SGDs, and Mangrove Alliance, it could be concluded that restoration of seemingly beyond-repair environment cost-effectively through researching the local environment and learning of local knowledge to be able to implement the innovative solution for alleviating the problems that mangroves are facing.
Therefore, the research and learning center will be an innovative solution in restoring the mangrove forest by researching the ecosystem of the mangrove forest to find solutions in dealing with the costal problems and showcase the experimental fields of what are the problems that we are facing today. In addition, the research and learning center will also provide the knowledge through research of the mangrove forest that will support the continuous learning for the local community and public so that people will take the stewardship for their environment and thus able to sustain long-term restoration efforts of the mangrove forest.
